Energy Healing 101: Why Reiki Should Be A Regular Part of Your Self-Care

I first discovered the magic of energy work in my early twenties.

It was shortly after I started my life coach training and was deep in the study of all things spiritual and metaphysical.

I met a group of local ladies at Starbucks one evening to swap tales of our new age adventures. One woman had started going for Reiki treatments and was gushing about how rejuvenated and clear she felt after her sessions.

Intrigued… I decided to make an appointment with her Reiki master.

During my 1st treatment a repressed memory of a psychic experience I’d had in childhood came flooding back into my conscious awareness. The experience was so fascinating and felt incredibly euphoric. So I set the intention to make Reiki and energy work a regular part of my life and spiritual path.... which set me on a mission to learn as much as I could about the chakras, our emotions and our energetic body.

Fast-forward three years and I’m now a Reiki practitioner.  After receiving treatments and studying energy healing for a few years, I felt called to “open my hands” and become certified in the practice.

Energy healing is a huge and expansive topic that you could literally dedicate your entire life to learning (some people have!). So in this post I’m just hoping to equip you with the basics.

 

What is Reiki Energy Healing?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation and healing based on the principle that unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive.

The word Reiki is actually two Japanese words combined… Rei meaning “God’s wisdom or Higher Power” and Ki which means “life force energy.” So essentially Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy.

During a Reiki treatment a practitioner becomes a channel for life force energy and guides that energy into another person’s body through touch.

Reiki treats a person’s “whole” body, aka the mind, the body and the spirit. Typically the practitioner will work through and balance each chakra before moving onto the body’s other energy meridians. It’s the life force energy that’s in charge though… it guides the Reiki practitioner to the parts of the body that need energy the most… so every session might be a little bit different.

When you’re receiving a Reiki treatment it’s like a warm, glowing, radiance is flowing through you and around you. When I receive treatments I feel incredibly light, warm and tingly… like a vibrational current is rippling through my body.

Some practitioners will use crystals or singing bowls or both to enhance the Reiki by infusing even more high-vibrational healing energy into the session.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature there is no particular dogma or religion attached to the practice. There is nothing you must believe in order to receive or use Reiki. It truly is a practice that is open and available to anyone, which is maybe why I love it so much.

How does Reiki heal?

Our physical body is alive because of the life force energy that’s flowing through it. If our “life force” is low or blocked it weakens our immune system making us more susceptible to illness. But if it’s high or free flowing, we can more easily maintain a state of health and wellbeing.

The number one thing that weakens or blocks our life force energy is stress. Stress is often caused by conflicting thoughts and feelings that get lodged into one’s energy system.

The first way Reiki heals is through evoking a deep state of relaxation. When our bodies are deeply relaxed and not responding to stress healing is naturally promoted… like in sleep or meditation. 

Reiki also helps restore energy, balance and vitality by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased stress. As the life force energy is channeled through the practitioner’s hands and into the body it gently and effectively opens blocked meridians, nadas and chakras, and clears the energy bodies, leaving one feeling peaceful, relaxed and restored.

What are benefits or Reiki treatments?

Reiki energy healing has tons of benefits for the body, mind and spirit, including:

·      Relaxation & stress reduction. Stress is responsible for a multitude of conditions that sabotage our health… heart problems, digestion issues, mood disorders, low sex drive… to name just a few. When you reduce stress and promote deep relaxation, you strengthen the body’s immunity system helping reduce physical illness.

·      Improved mood and emotional wellbeing. Reiki works to heal and balance our energetic body where are emotions are rooted meaning it can help us to release the negative thoughts and patterns of behavior that create anxiety and depression.

·      Catalyst for emotional & spiritual growth. When our life force energy is free flowing our capacity to love, empathize, connect to our intuition and understand the deeper meaning behind things deepens.

·      Promotes healing of physical conditions. Reiki energy healing has been known to ease the symptoms and promote healing in many physical conditions ranging from arthritis and asthma, to insomnia and cancer. It’s my personal belief that Reiki should be used in conjunction with modern and natural medicine. Our health truly is holistic, and it’s wise to approach illness from a body, mind and spirit perspective. Therefore physical treatment should be sought for physical illness.
