Higher Vibes: How to Open to Infinite Energy

My mind has been blowing all week.

I’m talking jaw dropping, heart racing, lightning bolts sparkling out of my skull, MIND BLOWN amazing-ness.

The reason? A new book.

My friend and badass goal coach, Jacki Carr, invited me to join her online book club this fall. When she told me October’s read was going to be The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer, I was stoookkkked.

I watched Singer throw it down with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday a few months ago and it lit me up like a ball of fire. Now, five chapters deep into The Untethered Soul, I’m glowing and thinking magnificent, deep, juicy thoughts about my life, my purpose and the meaning of it all.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, then get your hands on a copy of this sweet book stat. It’s a deep and challenging read. But if you’ve been on a spiritual path for awhile and find yourself consistently asking those big, deep, crazy questions – this might just be the book you need to make sense of it all.

Great! Let’s talk energy.

If you’re a regular reader, a dear friend or badass client of mine, you know I talk A LOT about energy. All of the resources I create, including this blog and my weekly newsletter, are to give epic babes like you wisdom and tools to live a high-vibe lifestyle. And I do my best to practice what I preach each week.

I’ve always felt deep resonance with the new-agey concept of energy. It’s always felt very true to me. It has always just made sense. But I’ll admit I’m an intuitive, highly emotional right-brainer who rarely requires statistics and logical analysis to come to the conclusion something is real or true. I can just feel it.

I believe that we are all made up of energy. In fact, all beings are, and our energy affects the energy of others because we are all interconnected. It’s something I’ve felt in my heart for a while, and, yes, I am fully aware of how hippy it sounds.

So you can see why my eyes literally exploded into heart emojis when I read this: 

“Consciousness is one the great mysteries of life. Inner energy is another. It’s actually a shame how little attention the Western world pays to the laws of inner energy. We study energy outside, and give great value to energy resources, but we ignore the energy within. People go about their lives thinking, feeling and acting, without the understanding of what makes these activities take place. The truth is, every movement of your body, every emotion you have, and every thought that passes through your mind is an expenditure of energy. Just as everything that happens outside in the physical world requires energy, everything that happens inside requires an expenditure of energy… Creating thoughts, holding onto thoughts, recalling thoughts, generating emotions, controlling emotions, and disciplining powerful inner drives, all require a tremendous expenditure of energy.” 


Reading that paragraph totally validated and explained to me a concept I’d always felt was true. And now, I have solid examples to share with the all of the wonderful left-brainers in my life. #overthemoon

The energy Singer describes doesn’t come from calories or sleep; it comes from deep within you. It’s always there, in infinite quantities available for you to use at anytime.

In Chinese medicine it’s called Chi.

In yoga it’s called Shakti.

In the west it’s called Spirit.

You can call it whatever you want – the title really doesn’t matter. What matters is your awareness of this wellspring of beautiful energy swirling inside of you always. It belongs to you. It’s your birthright.

This is the spiritual energy that gushes forward when you fall in love with someone new – the kind that will keep you up all night talking to your hot new romance even after working a week of doubles.

It’s the rush of energy that comes over you when you get excited or super enthused by something you’re working on, even though you haven’t eaten all day.

We all have the ability to feel the boundless joy that comes from tapping into this infinite energy.

So why aren’t we all just blissed out all day?

We get blocked!

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “blocked” or “stuck,” before. Well, that’s what happens with this beautiful energy stops flowing through us.  And these blockages? We create them.

Here’s an example of how.

Let’s say you meet someone new and you really like them. There’s chemistry. You hit it off. They’re giving you lots of awesome compliments and you’re totally into their presence.  The more you talk, the more you trust them. They seem SO cool. Your walls are coming down. You’re letting them in. And you’re feeling lots of high-vibe energy. You leave the conversation feeling all warm and fuzzy, your heart glowing.

Fast-forward two weeks and you see them again. You’re pumped! But this time they say something that embarrasses you in front a small group of people. It really doesn’t make you feel good. The love you once felt for them dwindles and now you feel tightness in your chest instead of all of that awesome high-vibe energy.

You leave the interaction but can’t shake the shitty feeling. Now, every time you think of them that sharpness comes to your chest. The walls go back up. The trust and love is gone. The next time you meet someone new and cool, you hold back, you don’t open up as much.

Do you see what you just did there? You closed your heart.

The heart is an energy center and it can be opened or closed. Yogis like to call energy centers chakras, and we have seven of them reaching from our tailbone all the way up to the crown of our head. When you close any of these energy centers your spiritual energy can’t flow in. And without this energy, there’s darkness.

Depending on how closed you are, you can experience a wide range of disturbing sensations ranging from sadness and lethargy to anxiety and feeling overwhelmed.

Most of us block ourselves without any awareness because we’re programmed to open or close based on past experiences. For example, if you were criticized by your teacher way back in elementary school, you might hold back from speaking out in meetings as an adult.

But with awareness comes the power of choice.

My goal with this blog post is to awaken you to the concept that you can either CHOOSE to OPEN yourself up to this magnificent spiritual energy or CLOSE yourself off. The choice really is yours. You’ve got the power.

As Singer says: 

“You should never leave something as important as your energy flow to chance. If you like energy, and you do, then don’t ever close. The more you learn to stay open, the more the energy can flow into you.”

So how exactly do you open? By not closing.

When you feel that wince of pain, don’t close yourself off or push it away. Choose to be present with it. Choose to experience it. Choose to open yourself up to it. Through meditation, awareness and willful efforts you can keep yourself open.

At first this will feel unnatural. We are so hardwired to close up when we sense a threat. We think we’re protecting ourselves, but we’re not. We are only cutting ourselves off from the infinite energy that exists within us. This keeps us suffering, alone in the dark.

Make a commitment to stay awake and open, no matter what life throws your way, and you’ll experience the boundless joy, infectious happiness and deep love. What else could you want?

“The most important thing in life is your inner energy. If you’re always tired and never enthused, then life’s no fun. But if you’re always inspired and filled with energy, then every minute of every day is an exciting experience.”

TAKING ACTION: Tapping into your Infinite Energy

Step 1: Practice Awareness

This week practice energy awareness. When do you notice yourself experiencing spiritual energy coursing through you? That rush of joy, love and excitement? When do you feel, sluggish, withdrawn or anxious? Where might you be closing down and blocking spiritual energy?

Step 2: Choose to Open

Once you’re aware of some your blocks, choose to open. Get cozy with vulnerability. Relax, release, and forgive. Meditate. Sit with those uncomfortable sensations and breathe love into them.
